Barbiecore: The Fashion Trend of The Summer

How did Barbiecore become a global phenomenon?

Barbiecore is the fashion trend of the moment. With the worldwide marketing campaign of the new movie ‘Barbie’ and Valentino’s 2023 vivid pink runway collection, it has become a phenomenon for celebrities and women globally to embrace their femininity and have fun indulging in girlish vibrant fashion choices. The key leader of this movement is undoubtedly Margot Robbie, who is also the star of the Barbie movie, acting as Barbie herself. Let’s take a look at her dazzling Barbie inspired red carpet looks and break down the multiple references in her outfits.

Margot Robbie as Day to Night Barbie in Seoul

During the premiere of Barbie in Seoul, South Korea, Margot sported a custom Versace ensemble that was based on an authentic Barbie doll outfit design. The outfit consisted of a pink pencil skirt, a coordinating blazer, a mesh scarf, and a white hat adorned with a pink, polka-dot ribbon. The attire was a replica of the one donned by the 1985 Day to Night Barbie, which could be reversed to transform into a different version of the second dress worn by Robbie.

At the London premiere, Margot was dressed in a bespoke pink silk gown by Vivienne Westwood. The dress boasted a corseted bodice, a column skirt, and a rose embellishment with a lengthy train attached. Additionally, she briefly draped a white fur shawl over her shoulders on the red carpet. To accessorize her outfit, Robbie opted for matte ivory opera gloves and completed the look with a crystal rosette at the waist.

The attire Margot donned at the London premiere was inspired by the "Enchanted Evening" Barbie, which was launched in 1960. Although it was almost an exact copy of the "Evening Barbie" ensemble, the design was actually drawn from the white "Moonlight" gown showcased in Westwood's 2023 couture bridal collection. When rendered in pink, however, it was a fitting homage to the world of Barbie.

Other celebrities in Barbiecore

Other celebrities have also been seen sporting the Barbie look, such as Anne Hathaway hot-pink minidress and matching platform heels at Valentino's Haute Couture show in Italy, as well as Zendaya’s baby pink rose-embellished Dress for SAG Awards Red Carpet 2023. Her strapless dress was covered all over in an array of matching pink roses, which added a soft touch.

It is indeed refreshing and empowering to see celebrities and women embracing this hyper feminine style and indulging with fashion’s playfulness especially in the post-COVID world. Barbiecore’s current popularity also reflects how much society has progressed since the doll was first created, as the style can be a way for people to subvert or play with gender norms. This ultra pink fashion phenomenon is definitely not going away soon and will be the trend of the summer.
